Will Sir Alex Have To Choose Between CL and the EPL, Without Rooney?

So, this is what poetic justice feels like!
Score early. Get chances along the way. Hit the bar. Lose through a late goal with the last kick of the game. So this is what it feels like. Bayern must have planned this for 11 years, and undoubtedly there will be a sense of justice prevailing over the Allianz arena.
Louis Van Gaal was at the Nou Camp in 1999, as the Manager of Barcelona at the time and he too will have relished this – clearly he took away big lessons from the game.
In games like this you realize that a fit and performing Owen Hargreaves along with Fletcher might have been able to keep the Bayern midfield machine in check.
Too many United players under-performed – with Park, Carrick, Evra all muted. Neville struggled with Ribery. Van Bommel was striding through the middle towards the end of the game.
The impact of playing on tuesday after a late kick off on saturday should not be under-estimated. Especially when you’re also playing away in some 72 hours. The Bolton game was far from easy as well and players were probably recovering from a bruising encounter.
2-1 away in the first leg is not a bad result by any means, but Ferguson will be more upset about the way United played, and conceding such a demoralizingly late goal also has an impact. Still, United must target a 2-0 win at home. Keeping Bayern out at OT will be of paramount importance.
A lot depends on Rooney’s ankle of course. Whether he plays or not could define United’s strategy. Without him, Sir Alex will probably look for a 1-0 at home and look to shut Bayern out in the first half and nick a goal in the second.
Can’t help think this is a massive moment for Berbatov to define his United career. If Rooney misses the next 2 games and Berba manages to influence both games, he will have taken a huge step towards winning over his critics. On the other hand, if he’s anonymous, it will probably spell doom for his long term prospects at United and at best he will be consigned to stand in striker or to an occasional role playing behind Rooney or somebody else.
Rooney’s absence may also force Sir Alex to choose between the Champs League or the Premier League. If it comes to a crunch, he might choose the prem – as it has a historic meaning for United this year, and besides, the CL has more twists and turns.
This was billed as United’s crunch week and it hasn’t gotten off to the best of starts. But then United overcame a fair amount of adversity to pull off the treble in 1999, so this may well be the coming of age of this team, or it may be their undoing!
