Netherlands 2 – 0 Denmark – 5 Point Summary

Too little firepower for Denmark, a little too much of Dutch power for the Danes to handle…

  1. Bendtner & Van Persie were both very lively, but both played too deep to create any real goal threat. Both displayed some excellent touches in the middle of the park and neither survived the 90 minutes.

  2. Netherland’s football improved considerably when they brought the young Ajax players Elia and Afellay on for Van Der Vaart and Van Persie. The former more critical as it allowed Sneijder to move into the hole and do much more damage, which he duly did for the second goal.  And Elia’s wide play made a big difference to the penetrative capability of the Dutch.

  3. Poulssen will feel the pain tonight, doubly so. In the dying minutes, he made a goal line save that will probably be unsurpassed in the world cup. Kuyt’s cross eluded Sorrensen and Afellay connected well, but Poulson reacted tremendously to kick the ball out before it crossed the line. Sadly, it was his terribly directed header, which further deflected off Agger that put Netherlands up early in the second half and gave the Dutch the breathing space they required.

  4. The refereeing was very patchy. A couple of yellow cards were flashed, but some nasty tackles went unpunished.

  5. Denmark had a workmanlike game, but defensive lapses let them down. Apart from their own goal, you can see in the second goal Jakobsen lets Elia through on the inside, which is a cardinal sin and then Kjaer doesn’t track Kuyt’s run and gets caught a yard short. Full marks to Kuyt – yet another reward for effort for one of the hardest triers in the game.

Edgar Davids, on ITV, is the most surly commentator / expert I’ve seen for a while. He’s also wearing very similar dark glasses in the studio (why?) that he used to wear while playing for Spurs!
